About Native Yarns

Native Yarns is a young artisan dyeing business, located in the beautiful county of Suffolk. I'm Sue and I'm a keen knitter as well as being chief dyer. My husband Martin looks after the website and business end of things. We produce fabulous quality luxury yarn, using environmentally friendly, sustainable processes in our workshop in the lovely village of Laxfield.

I inherited a love of textiles from both my grandmothers and spent many happy times learning to knit, sew and crochet with them and have been making things for family and friends ever since. I am also an enthusiastic gardener and am in the process of establishing new beds in our garden to grow our own dye plants. I’m delighted that I have a few hundred seedlings in the poly tunnel awaiting their new homes!

It’s important to us to support British suppliers, as we believe the quality of the fibre they produce is wonderful and should be more widely used. We’re proud to say that we’re committed to using British wool and alpaca wherever possible.

Plant-dyed yarns produce a wider range of colours than purely pastel. We revel in the rich and the vibrant as well as the delicate and subtle. The colour palette from natural dyes is one that glows with a life of its own and offers the most wonderful possibilities when working in multi-colour as they harmonise beautifully. Britain has a great heritage in wool production as well as in the crafts that celebrate this wonderful natural material. I hope, through producing plant dyed yarns, to help keep this ancient craft alive and encourage more people to value this unique world of colour in wool and alpaca.

We hope you'll be inspired to create beautiful and unique things to wear and use.
